Head of the Scene Of Crime and the Major Crime Unit at CSI Portsmouth 5 November - crime fact versus crime fiction

Tomorrow is the big CSI Portsmouth event being held at the John Pounds Centre, Portsmouth (UK). Tickets are available on the door for the afternoon panel debate with crime writers, Mark Billingham, John Harvey, Michael Ridpath and me ( Pauline Rowson) versus crime experts: Dr Claire Nee, Forensic Psychologist; Dr Paul  Smith, Scene of Crime expert, and two police detectives from Hampshire Police: DS Martin Chudley and DC Nick Bettesworth.

Over the past weeks I have been featuring the speakers and panellists for CSI Portsmouth and last but by no means least are the two police officers.  I am just in awe of these guys who do a fantastic job often against the odds and up against ever increasing and often unnecessary bureaucracy.  DI Andy Horton my fictional detective knows all about that!  DI Horton is very much an action man and, of course, crime fiction is different to crime fact... or is it?  Come to CSI Portsmouth to find out.

DS Martin Chudley – Hampshire Police – Head of the Scene of Crime Dept.

DS Martin Chudley has 24 years experience as a police officer working mainly in Portsmouth and Gosport.  He has worked in CID and has been in the Scene of Crime department for the last 7 years.  He is one of  nine Crime Scene Managers within Hampshire who attend all suspicious deaths, serious sexual offences and other major incidents wherever they occur within Hampshire or the IOW.  He is currently a Temporary Detective Inspector and Head of the Scene of Crime Dept.  responsible for overseeing the deployment of 48 Crime Scene investigators to a wide variety of crime scenes.

DS Chudley was with us at CSI Portsmouth 2010 and I am delighted he is able to join us again for CSI Portsmouth 2011.

DS Martin Chudley and Pauline Rowson

With DS Chudley on the panel of experts this year is:

DC Nick Bettesworth – Major Crime Unit – Hampshire Police

DC Nick Bettesworth also has 24 years experience in the police and joined with Martin Chudley. He has been a  detective for 16 years, the last 2 with the Major Crime Team, working on murders, suspicious deaths and  stranger rapes. Prior to this he spent 2 years with the UK’s first dedicated rape / serious sexual assault investigation unit, known as The Crystal Unit, which was a Home Office funded pilot scheme based in Portsmouth.  In addition he has 8 years experience on the Serious and Organised Crime Department, mainly involved in large scale drugs investigations and during this time he was also involved in Operation Phoenix a large scale undercover drugs operation based in Southampton which subsequently convicted in the region of 150 drugs dealers.
