Friday 13th begins badly for Inspector Andy Horton in FOOTSTEPS ON THE SHORE

Friday the thirteenth begins badly for DI Andy Horton when he wakes to find his Harley has been vandalized and his boss, DCI Lorraine Bliss, has returned early from her secondment to HQ. Then, convicted murderer, Luke Felton, released on licence, is reported missing and a decomposed corpse is washed up in Portsmouth harbour.

Before Horton can get a grip on either case, he’s called to a house where a woman he’d only met the day before has been brutally murdered. Is missing Luke Felton the prime suspect, or is it his body in the mud of the harbour? Horton is under pressure to get results, but things are about to get much worse for the beleaguered detective …

Like others in the Horton crime series it is set in and around Portsmouth on the south coast of England.

One of the locations is close to the  Roman castle at Portchester where Venetia Trotman has been brutally murdered.  Horton had been intending to buy a boat from her which had belonged to her late husband to replace his small boat which had been torched by a villain with Horton only just managing to escape with his life. Horton has been living on board his boat in Southsea Marina since his estrangement from his wife, Catherine. 

Portchester Castle's history begins in the 3rd century AD when the Romans built a vast fort here. In the 5th century it was transformed into a Saxon settlement, and after the Conquest of 1066 it became a Norman castle. For medieval kings it was an important embarkation point for crossing the Channel. 

From 1665 Portchester served as a prisoner-of-war camp – a role that reached its height during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars of 1793–1815, when it housed up to 8,000 prisoners, of many nationalities and backgrounds, at any one time.  Now it is a very popular visitor attraction owned by English Heritage and well worth a visit if you are ever in the region.  You never know you might bump into DI Andy Horton!

 

There are many twists and turns in this novel with a hint of international crime behind it but I will say no more. I wouldn’t want to spoil your enjoyment of it.
