Pauline Rowson on the emotional baggage behind her fictional characters

An extract from my interview with John A Hoda on his My Favourite Detective Podcast show.

Listen to the full interview of "My Favourite Detective Podcast, Episode 136". On it I talk about my fictional characters: DI Andy Horton; Art Marvik and my 1950s set detective, Inspector Ryga, also how I write and how I plot and research my crime novels.

This extract I'm talking about the emotional baggage of my three series heroes/protagonists.

Fiftieth anniversary of my aunt's brutal murder

Not every crime writer has personal experience of murder in their family but this year is the fiftieth anniversary of the unsolved murder of my great aunt, Martha Giles. And it is one mystery that it appears I will never be able to solve. Over the last year, I have been piecing together the evidence of the Martha Giles murder which hit the headlines in the national newspapers in 1959 but I’ve finally hit a brick wall after being denied access to certain ‘closed’ files in the National Archives. Take your pick!

We're having a bit of a dilema in choosing the jacket for the next DI Andy Horton novel, due out in March 2008. Comments, thoughts, views, welcome. Option 1 above centre, Option 2 on the left, and Option 3 on the right. I know which one I prefer but would like to know what others think. Take your pick! Horton is given a week to find a killer before being shunted off the case. Overlooked for promotion and cold-shouldered by Uckfield, Horton now has a point to prove as well as a complex murder case to solve. Not only that, but a spate of antiques thefts plaguing the city of Portsmouth and pressure from his estranged wife...

Researching crime novels

Image
How do you research your crime novels? I'm often asked this question.  My research is conducted by talking to experts, consulting the Internet and relevant books, and of course visiting the police.  But one source of information on what it's really like for the police out there in the big bad world today is a great blog, written by an Inspector. It's entertaining, thought-provoking, upsetting and can sometimes make me despair.  The post below is particularly illuminating and great background for my Inspector Horton Marine Mysteries.  It's written by a 'real live cop' with passion and clearly communicates his dedication to his job.  You might want to check it out!  What Really Matters At The Top :
